U.S. Embassy Concern Over Misrepresentation of U.S. Government Documents (June 30, 2005)

We wish to express our concern about the misuse of, and misrepresentation of, activities of U.S. Government officials in the media here in Albania.

Television reports have been broadcasting a copy of a letter from a U.S. senator and alleging that the Senator has called for an investigation by the U.S. Justice Department of Prime Minister Nano.

This is false. It is not what Senator Schumer put into his letter, and we are deeply unhappy at this irresponsible use of correspondence of a member of the United States Senate.

There have also been media references to information on the Embassy website. This information, which simply alerts U.S. citizens to be careful about crime, was placed on the website on April 9, not this week, and is a routine update to U.S. citizens.
