Lawful Permanent Resident Abroad Wishing To Abandon Their Status

If you are a Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States and wish to abandon your permanent residence status and relinquish your Permanent Resident Card or "Green Card", please contact us via e-mail at TiranaUSConsulate@state.gov specifically requesting to abandon your Permanent Resident Status.

Required Documentation

As soon as an appointment has been scheduled for you, please prepare and bring the following:

  • Form I-407, Abandonment of Lawful Permanent Resident Status
  • Your Permanent Resident Card (Green Card).

Our office will send your request, Form I-407 and your Permanent Resident Card, to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office with jursidiction over our consular district.  As soon as USCIS processes your application, a copy of this form will be returned to you.

This copy of the completed I-407 is your receipt and it validates the return of your Permanent Resident Card. You should keep a copy of the completed I-407 with your passport if you travel to the United States in the future.

Abandoning your Permanent Resident Card and status does not affect your ability to apply to immigrate to the United States at some future time. However, you will have to begin the immigration process from the beginning.
