Ambassador Marcie B. Ries Visits Shkodër to Meet Local and Central Government Representatives, University Officials and Students (April 12, 2007)

U.S. Ambassador Marcie B. Ries was in Shkoder, April 12, for a one-day visit. Her first meetings of the day were with the new Mayor and Prefect. Ambassador Ries congratulated Mayor Luka on his new position and asked about his plans and Shkodra’s future economic development.
During a meeting with the Prefect Cungu, Ambassador Ries noted Shkodër’s unique history as an important urban center of Northern Albania. Ambassador Ries spoke with the Prefect about USG assistance programs in and around the Shkodra area.
Ambassador Ries assured both Mr. Luka and Mr. Cungu that the U.S. Embassy, through USAID and other USG programs, would continue to be present and compliment ongoing efforts to improve the lives of citizens.
Ambassador Ries announced the Democracy Commission Grant Program Open Season at the University of Shkoder to local NGOs and media representatives. Ambassador Ries called for project proposals that would enhance civil society cooperation with local government and business. Ambassador Ries reiterated her belief that the development of local civil society organizations that promote civic participation at all levels is important for Albania.
Ambassador Ries took some time to meet with students from different fields of study to discuss civic participation and environmentalism. She encouraged students to actively seek opportunities to give back to their communities.
